We have been working in the Cork community since 1957. Over the years, so much has changed. Our approach, our structure and even our name. But one thing has always stayed the same. We are here to support people to live their lives.
Our journey
Where it all began
In 1957, our organisation was founded in response to the Polio Epidemic which hit Cork in the 1950s. Then, it was the Cork Poliomyelitis Association.
1957
Supporting people across Cork
A year later, our organisation becomes Cork Polio and General After-care Association. As well as supporting people who were affected by the Polio Epidemic, we also supported people of all ages with an intellectual disability.
1958
Time for change
As the services we provided developed with each passing decade, the decision was made to change our name to Cope Foundation.
1988
North Lee ASD Service
In 2005 we developed the North Lee ASD Service for children with autism spectrum disorder. From this time, we began to support people with an intellectual disability and/or autism.
2005
Playing a vital role in Cork communities
Our organisation supports over 2,800 people with an intellectual disability and/or autism. We have over 70 locations across Cork city and county.
2020
A new look and feel
With so much positive change in our sector including new laws for people with disabilities, we want to reflect the ambition and power of the people we support. Our organisation becomes Horizons.
