Darragh’s Story

My name is Darragh, I am 9 years old. I attend Scoil Aislinn and I avail of Speech and Language Services in Horizons.

I am from Ballyvolane, I live at home with my Mam, Dad and two older brothers.

I have Autism Spectrum Disorder with associated communication difficulties.

This means that I find it difficult to use speech to communicate. I only have a few words that people can understand so this can be frustrating when I am trying to communicate with the people around me.

The Speech and Language Therapists at Horizons worked with me to trial some AAC (Alternative and Augmentative Communication) devices. AAC is any tool, system or device used as a support or alternative to speech. We tried a few devices but it was tricky to get one that suited me. Then we discovered a new device called Indii. I love using this device, even after 1-2 days of using it I was able to communicate. I showed how much I enjoyed the device by smiling and laughing more while I was using it.
